Beltline takes its name from an early 20th-century streetcar route, and the neighbourhood it now describes formed in 2003 from the amalgamation of two older inner-city communities: Connaught, established in 1905, and Victoria Park, established in 1914. Physically separated from downtown proper by the CPR mainline tracks, Beltline is bounded by 17th Avenue to the south, 14th Street to the west, and the Elbow River to the east, and it holds the highest population density of any neighbourhood in Calgary. Renters here live almost entirely in high-rise apartments and condominiums, with the community organized into four informal districts — West Connaught, Connaught Centre, Victoria Park, and East Victoria Park — plus looser pockets known as Midtown, the Design District, and the Warehouse District. 17th Avenue itself is the neighbourhood's commercial spine, packed with restaurants, bars, and boutique shops, and it earned the nickname the Red Mile during the Calgary Flames' 2004 playoff run, when crowds filled the street on game nights. Downtown's 7th Avenue C-Train corridor is a short walk north across the tracks, and the Erlton/Stampede station sits within reach to the south, giving Beltline renters transit access on both sides of the community without owning a car.
