Bridgeland/Riverside began as two separate settlements on the north bank of the Bow River: Riverside, established in 1908 and known informally as Germantown for its Russian-German immigrant population, and Bridgeland, developed by the Dominion Bridge Company for working-class residents. Both were annexed to the city in 1910, and by the early twentieth century the area had also drawn Italian and Ukrainian immigrants, earning the Bridgeland side the nickname Little Italy. The two names eventually merged into the community's current combined form.
