Before it became Patterson Heights, this stretch of southwest Calgary was known as Broadcast Hill, named for the 250-metre CFCN re-transmission tower once located here; the land was largely acreages before annexation to Calgary in 1956, and the site was even considered as a location for the University of Alberta before Edmonton was chosen instead. The community takes its current name from the Patterson family, who owned much of the land, and was formally established as a neighbourhood in 1983. Patterson is bounded by Sarcee Trail to the east and north, Bow Trail to the south, and 69 Street to the west, with Edworthy Park bordering it to the north and east across Sarcee Trail, giving renters direct access to river-valley trails. The community's western boundary at 69 Street places it at the western terminus of the West LRT's Blue Line, offering a direct transit connection into downtown. Housing includes a meaningful share of condominiums and apartments alongside single-family homes, and the neighbourhood's elevated position gives many streets views over the Bow River valley and toward the Rockies, a legacy of the broadcast tower that once made this one of the highest points in the city.
