Lower Mount Royal Rentals Near 17th Ave | Livenvo Rent
Lower Mount Royal was annexed in 1907 as part of the Canadian Pacific Railway's exclusive Mount Royal subdivision, but its smaller lots and wood-frame construction set it apart from the estates above. Today it's a dense, mixed-density pocket near 17th Avenue, with heritage homes standing beside newer apartments and condos.
Lower Mount Royal shares its origins with Upper Mount Royal on the hill above it: both were annexed to Calgary in 1907 and became part of the CPR's original Mount Royal subdivision, laid out in 1909 as an exclusive address for the city's business elite. But Lower Mount Royal, occupying the flatter ground north of Cameron and Royal Avenues, developed differently from the start. Its lots were subdivided smaller, some down to twenty-five feet, and its homes were built largely of wood and stucco rather than the brick and sandstone favoured above, giving it more in common architecturally with the neighbouring Beltline than with Upper Mount Royal's estates. That difference shaped the neighbourhood's evolution: over the past several decades, much of Lower Mount Royal's housing stock has redeveloped into apartment and condo buildings alongside surviving early-1900s homes, and the community today carries a noticeably more urban, mixed-density character. It's bordered by Upper Mount Royal, Cliff Bungalow, Bankview, and the Beltline, putting renters within easy walking distance of 17th Avenue's restaurants and bars as well as downtown. The Erlton/Stampede C-Train station and the 7th Avenue downtown corridor are both within a reasonable walk, giving Lower Mount Royal renters transit options in more than one direction.
