Mission's history predates Calgary's own incorporation as a city: Oblate missionary Father Constantine Scollen founded a permanent Catholic mission here, Notre Dame de la Paix, in 1875, and the settlement that grew around it became the incorporated Village of Rouleauville, named for the influential Rouleau family. Calgary annexed Rouleauville in 1907 and renamed the community Mission, though the French Catholic legacy remains visible in landmarks like St. Mary's Cathedral and the restored Rouleau House, the oldest surviving building in the district. Today's Mission is centred on 4th Street Southwest, a dense strip of restaurants, boutiques, and markets that draws visitors from across the city, and the neighbourhood hosts the Lilac Festival each June, filling the street with vendors and live music. The community sits along the Elbow River, with Lindsay Park and the river pathway offering green space within walking distance, and Mission borders Cliff Bungalow, Victoria Park, and Lower Mount Royal, putting renters close to 17th Avenue's nightlife without living directly on it. The Erlton/Stampede C-Train station sits within reach across the river to the east, giving Mission renters Red Line access alongside the neighbourhood's dense mix of restaurants, apartments, and heritage buildings.
