Cliff Bungalow developed on land the Canadian Pacific Railway owned through the 1870s, first populated largely by CPR employees drawn by the short distance to the railway's headquarters and yards. The area was gradually annexed to Calgary between 1906 and 1912 and formally established as a community in 1907, though the Cliff Bungalow name itself wasn't applied until the 1970s, describing the land west of 4th Street and east of the escarpment that gives the neighbourhood its name.
