Sunnyside's first homesteaders arrived in the 1880s, and the community was incorporated into the City of Calgary in 1904, making it one of the city's oldest inner-city communities. It's bounded by Centre Street to the east, 10th Street NW to the west, McHugh Bluff to the north, and the Bow River to the south, partnering with neighbouring Hillhurst to form the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association. Sunnyside Station serves the Red Line CTrain, and as the first stop after the downtown free-fare zone it sees heavy ridership from commuters who drive in, park, and walk the rest of the way downtown. Memorial Drive runs along the community's southern edge for east-west traffic, while 10th Street NW handles north-south movement toward Kensington's shops, cafes, and restaurants just to the west. The original streetcar route through Sunnyside — which once carried Canadian Pacific Railway and Eau Claire Sawmill workers up the hill to the Centre Street Bridge — is now part of the city's paved pathway system, running behind the Calgary Curling Club and underneath the McHugh Bluff stairs. For renters, Sunnyside combines walkable inner-city living with some of the most direct transit access to downtown of any Calgary neighbourhood.
