Hillhurst Rentals Near Kensington | Livenvo Rent
Hillhurst was established in 1914 on land first homesteaded in the 1880s, and today it holds the largest share of Calgary's Kensington shopping district. Renters get independent shops, cafes, and pubs right in the neighbourhood, plus Bow River pathway access and a straightforward walk across the Bow into downtown.
Hillhurst is one of Calgary's oldest neighbourhoods, established in 1914 after Felix McHugh's original 1883 homestead gave way to subdivision under land developer Ezra Riley, who sold much of the area to the city in 1904. It's bounded by 8th Avenue NW to the north, 10th Street NW to the east, the Bow River to the south, and 18th Street NW to the west, and together with neighbouring Sunnyside it forms the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association. The Kensington Business Revitalization Zone, Calgary's self-described urban village, sits largely within Hillhurst's boundaries — more than 250 independent shops, cafes, restaurants, and pubs cluster around Kensington Road and 10th Street NW, hosting annual events like Christmas in Kensington and the Sun and Salsa Festival. Hillhurst Athletic Park adds soccer pitches, ball diamonds, and tennis courts for residents, and the Bow Valley Lawn Bowling Club has operated in the community for decades. Renters get walkable access to downtown across the Bow River, along with SAIT to the north and a short CTrain ride to the University of Calgary. With an area redevelopment plan in place since 2009 and steady infill development, Hillhurst mixes early-1900s character homes with newer condos and low-rises, making it one of the more consistently in-demand rental markets in inner-city Calgary.
