Inglewood traces back to 1875, the same year the North-West Mounted Police built Fort Calgary at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, making it the oldest neighbourhood in the city. Originally known as East Calgary or Brewery Flats, the community took its current name in 1911, after Colonel James Walker's riverside homestead, Inglewood, whose land later became the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Ninth Avenue, once called Atlantic Avenue, was likely Calgary's first main street, and today the same corridor holds more than a hundred shops, restaurants, and breweries inside buildings that survived from before 1914, part of what's earned Inglewood recognition as one of Canada's great communities. The Bird Sanctuary itself remains an active urban wildlife refuge along the Bow River, and Inglewood is part of Calgary's Music Mile, with live venues contributing to the neighbourhood's reputation as a hub for local musicians. A Green Line LRT station is planned for the Ramsay-Inglewood area, though it isn't built yet, so for now renters rely on bus routes and the short walk into downtown for transit. Between its arts scene, its river pathway access, and more surviving pre-war architecture than almost anywhere else in the city, Inglewood offers a genuinely distinct rental market.
