Few Calgary neighbourhoods carry more history per square block than East Village. This is where the city itself began, at the meeting point of the Bow and Elbow Rivers near Fort Calgary, and the community spent much of the 20th century as one of downtown's most neglected corners before the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation took on its revitalization starting in 2007. That effort reshaped roughly 49 acres between Fort Calgary and the downtown business core, raising streets above the floodplain, rebuilding infrastructure, and clearing the way for new condo towers, hotels, and public space. The Jack and Jean Leslie RiverWalk, completed in 2012, now runs along the Bow River's south bank and links East Village into Calgary's broader river pathway network. Studio Bell, home to the National Music Centre, and the New Central Library both anchor the neighbourhood's cultural offering, and the historic Simmons Building along the RiverWalk houses several restaurants inside a restored century-old mattress factory. City Hall Station sits within walking distance for C-Train access on the Red and Blue lines, making East Village one of the more connected addresses for renters who want downtown proximity with a distinct neighbourhood identity of its own.
